Introduction
During Autumn of 2019, as a part of an eight-week short-course titled ‘Building Informatics’ lead by Yu Morishita, a student cohort of the Engineering department of UTokyo participated in a field visit to Memu Earth Lab, in Taiki, Hokkaido.

The purpose of this field visit was to record and document the students’ preconceptions, initial or ‘first’ impressions, and finally deeper understandings of place, context and surrounding environment.

In brainstorm and discussion sessions prior to departure, the students were requested to consider if and what a specific attribute of the place may be interesting and informative to investigate. The students had freedom of choice as to the specificity of each theme or topic to be investigated, as the overall purpose of the field visit was to make comparisons and linkages to preconception with that of gathered experiential information.
